The Coaches

Mike Martin
Coach Mikes first experience with CrossFit was in the Army. His unit had started implementing CrossFit into their physical fitness training as they were gearing up for a deployment to Iraq. After noticing the improvement CrossFit had on his troops he went to GSX CrossFit to get his CrossFit L-1 Cert in April of 2009. Once deployed he and his unit built their own box and did what they could with the equipment they had which meant a lot of “Murph”. After a second deployment Coach Mike took over as Head Coach for Centurion CrossFit Fort Hood. He knew after taking over as Head Coach what he wanted to do for the rest of his life. Just 8 months after being Honorably Discharged from the Army he affiliated Mad Apple CrossFit in Fort Wayne. Now you can find Coach Mike trying to avoid any WOD with Pistols.

Maddie Shine
maddiefinalbiopicTwo years ago I decided to make a big change in my life because I was unhappy with the weight I had put on during college. After a year of working out at a normal gym, becoming a group exercise instructor, and getting bored with my daily routine, I decided to take up CrossFit. CrossFit has changed my life completely. The day I started I instantly fell in love with the entire concept. Thanks to CrossFit training I have lost a total of 50lbs. Growing up I did gymnastics and was a competitive equestrian, and CrossFit has allowed me to expand my athletic capability. What I love the most is how it continues to push me daily and there is always constant improvement.

One of my earliest memories is watching my Dad lift weights in our garage. It is his passion for sports and physical fitness that started my love for both. I dreamed of becoming a Professional Football player. I was Lucky enough to play 2 sports at Tiffin University. Running track and playing Football kept me in shape throughout college. After college I played 3+ years of Professional Indoor Football. I had a blast playing indoor ball and got to experience one of my boyhood dreams in getting paid to play the sport I love. I had a couple of workouts with the Detroit Lions, but couldn’t stay healthy, so after 3 season I decided to hang up the Turf shoes. I briefly came out of retirement and played 2 games in 2009. After finishing up my football career, I longed for something to keep me competitive. There I found Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, and Mixed Martial arts. I competed in many grappling competitions, and had 2 MMA fights over the course of a few years. After my wife became pregnant with our 1st child, I promised I would give up the fight game, so I again found myself longing for competition. I fumbled around with fitness programs, even tried to run a little more, but nothing really stuck. That is until I found CrossFit. I did my first on ramp class in the Fall of 2012, and I’ve been Hooked every since. What I’ve found is not only does CrossFit fill my competitive edge I was looking for, it fills the thing I missed the most about playing a team sports, and that’s the actual Team part of it! Being part of the CrossFit community is the best part about CrossFit. Sure the physical results are great, but the quality people you meet while achieving those results takes the cake.

Kaleb Hetrick
CROSSFIT_6_10_FS
Kaleb grew up in Fort Wayne playing most sports but favoring baseball. He grew up in a family that always pushed him to do his best and encouraged him to be involved in several different sports and activities. Having an older brother who was also involved in sports, he always had a competitive drive. Although he enjoys competition, his passion and strength comes through him being a man of God. Nothing Kaleb has accomplished this far goes without giving the glory back to God. Kaleb has been a gym rat for years, but has recently had the joy of falling in love with CrossFit. He always asked himself what his purpose for training at the gym was and when he discovered CrossFit, he found the answer. He is driven to helping people succeed in their dreams and goals and wants to help make a difference in the world.

Bored of her running routine and occasional gym-going routine, Coach Vicki stumbled upon CrossFit after a few friends’ posts on Facebook and Twitter caught her eye.  She walked into her intro class intimidated and not knowing what to expect.  At that point she never would have known how great an impact CrossFit would have on her life.  There is nothing else out there like CrossFit.  Not only are the workouts geared to bring your body to its peak in fitness, but the CrossFit community is what brought her back week after week.  Every time she came to the box, she was surrounded by like-minded people who love being there just as much as she did.  In no other gym has she felt the same type of camaraderie.  CrossFit is something that has become a major part of her life.

Carmen McGee
carmenI discovered CrossFit in 2011 at the age of 40, two months shy of my 41st birthday and it never, ever occurred to me that I was too old for this sport; instead of being intimidated I was hooked. Before CrossFit I was a competitive triathlete and runner, I’ve been athletic my whole life, I am very competitive and once I tried CrossFit I felt it was what I had been searching for perpetually. I have won two masters competitions, a “regular age” team competition with Coach Mallory, and placed 5th at the 2014 Granite Games. I have a super hot husband who also does CrossFit and two daughters, ages 11 & 9; they can both deadlift, burpee, and clean in jerk, and they write their own WODS! In my free time away from the gym I am the co-owner, sommelier and event coordinator for The Golden Restaurant located in Down Town Fort Wayne.

Kurt PattersonKurt Patterson

I found CrossFit in Oct 2010 while preparing for the Chicago Urbanathlon and was immediately addicted. I earned my CrossFit Level 1 Certificate in May 2011 and have been leading classes ever since.  I am very goal driven and thrive on competition.  I enjoy helping others succeed and have a passion for coaching.  I retired from coaching basketball in 2015 after 24 years to spend more time with my family and focus on my fitness.  My beautiful wife, is also member at Mad Apple.  I have 2 daughters who are both married and living in Indianapolis with their husbands and my 3 grandsons.  And a 4th grandson will be here soon.  Mad Apple is more than just “working out”, it is camaraderie, it is a family, and it is helping one another achieve.

Diana Rockey
DianaAfter spending most of her adult life staying active through running and multiple video routines, Diana found CrossFit by going back to visit her first boss in the fitness industry, Michael Rutherford. Coach Rut owns Bootcamp Fitness/ CrossFit Kansas City, the 4th CrossFit gym in the nation and after a drop-in WOD that included slam balls, DU’s, sit ups and tire push throughs, she was hooked. Diana quickly found a box in Fort Wayne, and within three months began working in the office and subsequently became a coach. Her passion is finding the fun in fitness and helping people realize that they can be active at all ages and any fitness level.

Emily Brown

Coach Emily Brown

I have never been what you’d call an athletic kid. I always liked being active, but a connective tissue disorder slowed me down and had me in a wheelchair off and on through growth spurts in middle school. In 2015, after being mostly sedentary for several years, I was the heaviest I had ever been and miserable. My best friend, an avid crossfitter, moved in with me for a couple months and I tagged along to Mad Apple with her. I died during the intro class, but couldn’t wait to come back. The encouragement of the coaches and other members of the community made me feel a part of Mad Apple from day one. While the capacity to improve and grow in every aspect of fitness spoke to me on many levels. CrossFit has been the best physical therapy I have ever had. I am now down 50 pounds and capable of more than I ever imagined. When I am away from the box, I run my custom leather working company, M Bar M Leather Design, and try to keep up with my 29 nieces and nephews.
